It is believed by some people that Nyanza region is a home to devils, popularly known as 'Nyawawa'  said to be spirits of people who died in Lake Victoria.

They are said to occasionally come out sometimes to tour the dry land.

Many are afraid of them, though they are not known to harm people but can be very noisy.

The funny part is that one can always hear the voices of their dead relatives as the group passes by, singing and chanting.

However, you will never see anything when you try to look at them as they pass by your house.

It appeared that one day, some years back, I went to visit my mother's place in Kamser, Seka in Homa Bay, just near the shores of the lake.

I arrived late and had to trek to the homestead at around midnight and luckily, my hosts had been waiting for me at a nearby shopping centre along Asiyo Road.

On our way to the homestead, I could hear a group of people chatting and laughing and I mistook it for a group of young men coming from a music concert known as 'thum' here.

After some time the group went silent only to resume minutes later, this time ahead of us.

I began to panic as my hosts started shinning their torches and directing them to nearby fences.

We couldn't find anything and had to deal with the noises and gossip made by the group as they comforted me not to worry.

We got home safely and that's when I was told that those are the popular Nyawawa who were looking for pieces of metal.

They added that the only way to send them away is by hitting cooking pans and making noise which they find uncomfortable and take off.

This came as a confirmation of stories I had been getting from my grandfather Onguko K'Owino of Kano Kamagaga.

They are said to travel as far as Kano at times, considering that the lake touches on all the Nyanza counties
