Having that dream job and working to make sure you end up there is not a bad thing at all. However, that is only plausible if you have functional mechanisms to which you can safely and perhaps easily arrive there.

There are different matrices to which people measure their desire to land a job and make it their own. For some, it could be money while for some, it could just be the comfort to which they perceive the job to be. All in all, letting this desire become an obsession will limit your apprenticeship process.

It is much useful to pursue your passion. Learn about what makes you happy and be happy there rather than setting your eyes on a top government position just because it can pay and afford your dream lifestyle. You need to value personal development more than short paths to riches. It will be much dangerous to just have that job because of the salary and yet your abilities and interests clearly point you to something very different.

Your dream job will go a long way in diverting you from your interests especially if you let it to completely dictate what you are all about. As far as personal development is concerned, your passion is the most important aspect of your day-to-day living.

You also need to learn new things and allow your brain to accommodate new skills. Being obsessed with your dream job will work against this as you will have very little time to maintain your perfect presence of mind and work to develop your abilities.

If you cannot get to your dream job or if there are no possible routes there, it is more useful to get crossover skills and work your way up as per your skills and abilities.
