"My parents had to sell land so that I could go to school, " she told Ellen.

That account of her early life on the award-winning American show has been met with a degree of skepticism from a section of Kenyans on social media triggering scrutiny.

Agutu's Instagram portrays a lady with a taste for fine things and a strong love of travel.

A globe-trotting fashionista with a soft spot for bikinis and high-end drinks.

Critics and they are quite a number, have cited the flashy lifestyle on display on her Instagram as proof that she lied about her background.

She has been to Mexico, Indonesia and Peru world-renowned tourist destinations, to engage her passion for travel.

On the show, Agutu said that she was staying with a foster family in the U. S and had to work a number of jobs just to get by.

Photos of her on beaches decked out in bikinis adorn her Instagram page.

At the time of writing this article, she had not yet responded to the blistering criticism that her account has triggered.
