According to the residents, despite using all the recommended pesticides, the insects have continued to bother them, and are now calling upon their county government to intervene.

They want the county health sector to scout for possible remedies, saying that if bedbug bites would have been fatal, then they would all be dead by now.

"We thank God they bite but they don't kill, otherwise we could not be speaking by now," Abraham Mohammed told the Standard.

He added that attempts to import pesticides from as far as the neighbouring Uganda have also not bore any fruits.

"We have used all methods including using pesticides imported from Uganda but still the bedbugs are not dying," he said.

The most affected areas include Mjini, Kanduyi and Khalaba, where residents are now having to endure sleepless nights.

Sophia Abdi who lives in Mjini said that the insects are multiplying at an alarming rate, which is leaving the residents helpless and making them worried.

"The more we spread our beds and furniture the more these insects multiply, now what should we do?" she wondered.
