In the past, a woman who gave birth while still at her parent's home was considered immoral to an extent of even being branded a societal reject.
Before the societal eyes, the lady was a shame to her family and could even be thrown out of the homestead as she was seen as the randy type that cannot keep their legs closed.
But not anymore in today's society. In Thika for instance, many men say they prefer marrying women with kids for the following reasons.
1. Make good mothers: Peter Irungu, a construction worker in Kiganjo says he married his wife with two children and she has proven to be what 'I had always desired in a wife'.
"She is very respectful and treats me like a king all the time we are together. She takes me for what I am. I have two other kids with her and she takes care of all the four kids the way a good mother should," Irungu says.
2. Rise of 'slay queens': Joel Wanyoike who works at a leather factory in Thika says that today, a lady without a kid is difficult to distinguish from slay queens whom he equated to bringing 'hell' into your house. He, therefore, argued that to be on the safe side, marry a woman who has proved that she can take care of her family.
3. Independent: Both Wanyoike and Irungu agree that marrying a single mother, is an added advantage saying they are independent-minded.
"Sometimes I leave the house without food but on return, I find that my wife has even cooked food. On asking her where she got the money, she tells me it is from the savings she makes from the little cash I give her. She thinks on her own which I like a lot about her," said Wanyoike.
4. Not nagging: James Maina a shopkeeper at Kiganjo, says he dumped his wife of two years recently and married another woman with a kid. Maina says that his first wife who had no job always demanded to be given Sh500 every weekend for hair and make-up.
"If I failed, she would be angry with me for many days or she would storm the shop and 'steal' money without my knowledge. My second wife cut her hair short preferring to spend the salon cash on the kid instead," Maina said.
5. Proven fertility: The men say that some single ladies without kids have destroyed their fertility through careless usage of after-sex pills and would, therefore, be taking a 'risky bet with some of these girls'.
