Activist Boniface Mwangi could be charged with treason should police pursue 'plans to organise a revolution to topple government' charges, it has emerged.
On Monday, the renowned activist and former Starehe MP aspirant was arrested from his house, although he could not immediately establish the reason behind his latest incarceration.
"I have been arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations - DCI from my house. We are headed to Central Police Station. I haven't been told the reason for my arrest," he wrote.
A charge sheet prepared by Chief Inspector George Muchiri, an officer from DCI headquarters attached to Central Police Station, reveals that Mr Mwangi has information to do with alleged plot to topple government.
In the statement, Mwangi is told that he will be important in the ongoing investigations. However, the police have denied him chance to give a response.
“You are not obliged to state anything but should you elect to state anything, it will be taken down in writing and may be used as evidence,” he cautions Mwangi.
According to the Kenyan laws, a person found guilty of treason, will be subjected to death penalty. Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka was the last person to be hanged in Kenya in 1987 after being found guilty of botched coup in 1982.
In the past weeks, Mr Mwangi has been leading anti-government protests with the latest coming last week. Dozens of people poured into streets to condemn run away corruption.
