A decomposing body has been retrieved from a rented house in Matungulu, Machakos County.
The body belonging to Mwania Muindi (30) was discovered inside the house in Utooni village on Tuesday.
The deceased had reportedly gone missing on Sunday before his body was discovered.
Nguluni chief John Bosco Ndambuki said the body was discovered by neighbors who heard a foul smell emanating from the house.
He said the neighbors were forced to break the door to access the house.
Ndambuki said the man was found sleeping on his bed dead.
"Neighbors heard a foul smell coming from the house and since the man had not been seen for close to three days, they were forced to break the door," Ndambuki said.
He said the man hails from Mitaboni but had rented the house since he was working at a quarry within the village.
Ndambuki said the cause of the man's death was not immediately established.
"Nothing seemed wrong with him, it could be a natural cause but we can't make a conclusion until a postmortem is conducted," he said.
The body was removed to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital's mortuary.
