Some of these vegetation has been used to manufacture modern medicine. Among the Marakwet community, herbalists can deal with a stuck placenta in humans and animals as well as cool period pains.

Sirirte (Faurea saligna) backs are boiled and administered. This was given to menstruating female members of the society to calm pains. Herbalists solved the pains that accompany periods.

The complications that accompany birth are not a new phenomenon. There are times when a placenta is retained in humans and animals.

Medicine men and women burned the backs of Mutung’wo tree (Heeria reticulate) and the resulting ash given to affected women or animals. This saved lives.

This community also had herbal contraceptives.

Boiling and administering the backs of seet (Albizia) was one of the contraceptives that the Marakwet used. Some herbalists used it as an abortifacient.

Safe abortions were also done using Kipkurkuris (Cassia occidentalis) leaves and seeds.

The above herbal healing methods are a reliable source of modern medicine. Further research needs to be done on the mentioned plants and herbs to help in the manufacture of safe drugs that meet modern medical standards.
