Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has said that the referendum push can still be realized, despite not having been allocated any money in the recent budget.
The constitutional amendment push is led by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga and is enjoying the backing of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Mwaura who sits in the Senate Finance Committee now says that the money can be drawn from other places or projects through reallocation of finances.
He added that he is in support of the push to expand the executive arm of government, as well as the attempts to reintroduce the parliamentary system of governance.
"Reallocation is very easy. I support the referendum because we are too preoccupied with the presidency, everybody wants to be the president and the Deputy President (Reallocation ni rahisi sana. Referendum mimi naissupport kwa sababu we are too preoccupied with the presidency. Kila mtu anataka president na Deputy President)," he said.
Mwaura made the remarks during an interview on Radio Jambo on Saturday morning.
However, his proposal was faulted by fellow panellist and former Makadara MP Bernard Mutura, who pointed out that a reallocation is no longer an option under the 2010 constitution.
He said that any attempt to reallocate funds will see him and other Kenyans opposed to the referendum move to court to bar it.
"The constitution does not allow reallocation, it's over, if they attempt it we eill move to court (Katiba inekataa mambo ya reallocation, hiyo mambo iliisha, wakijaribu iyo mambo tutaenda kortini)," he added.
The referendum also enjoys the backing of some opposition figures but is yet to receive a complete approval from Deputy President William Ruto.
