Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has welcomed reports that President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to secure a Sh368 billion loan from China.
Uhuru failed to get the fund which was set to be used in the planned extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha in Nakuru county to the Kisumu port.
Speaking on Saturday morning, the ruling Jubilee Party lawmaker said that the loan would have subjected to more loans to pay.
He argued that most of it would have most likely ended up in people's pockets through corruption, and the fact that it was not secured is an achievement and reprieve for the taxpayer.
"Mimi nimeshukuru sana kwa sababu hiyo deni haikupeanwa maana ingeibiwa na wakora pale treasury. Ni afadhali hatukupewa (I am very grateful because the money was most likely going to be stolen at the Treasury)," he said.
Mwaura, formerly a nominated MP, was speaking on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi.
The senator noted that the extension is unnecessary in the first place, considering that the completed section of the railway has not been brining in any sensible profit.
He proposed the refurbishment of the current railroad which runs all the way to the Kenyan border with Uganda, which he said will be cheaper and more profitable.
"Haja gani reli nyingine ilhali hapo ilipofika kwa sasa haileti faida, heri turekebishe tuliyo nayo kwa sasa (there is no need extending it yet we are not recording any profit, it would be better to repair the current one)," he added.
Uhuru was accompanied by opposition leader Raila Odinga to China, Raila acting in his capacity as the African Union infrastructure envoy.
