Mtwapa is a town found about 15 kilometers from Mombasa City to the North. If anyone visits the city, be sure you will not have it all unless you visit Mtwapa as well.
"Mombasa na raha zake" will give you its real meaning once you step in Mtwapa. This is the third 'city' of Kenya, that is, after the usual cities, Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.
"Sin City" as it is commonly referred to, Mtwapa turns lively when the sun sets to usher in florescent lights which shine in different colours.
If one takes a late night walk in Mtwapa town, they will come across several things starting from 'a warm welcome' from sex workers who are more than willing to make visitors to the town feel at home.
The following are the things you will be meeting:
1. 'Slay queens'
These are ladies who are willing to party with newcomers, enjoy drinks with them, and what have you, but will not offer themselves for sex. They disappear after digging deep into your pocket. In most cases, they join dancers on the stage and not to come back thereafter.
2. Security personnel
One of the highly populated towns with good security in Mombasa County is Mtwapa town. There are number security officers that ensure the town remain secure for people, ranging from police officers, private bouncers and security guards.
3. College and university students
Do you know that most college students visiting the Coast of Kenya from any parts of the country find themselves in Mtwapa?
Accommodation has never been an issue in Mtwapa, and for that reason, most colleges and universities head to Mtwapa for cheaper accommodations during their tours at the Coast. At the night they end up joining residents to share "raha za Mombasa".
4. Drunkards
One of the things that residents and visitors enjoy in the town is drinking. With alcoholic drinks around, people getting drunk and wandering around in the town is obvious.
5. Street families
Forget about street children, here you will meet families, that is, mother, father and children all in one place. Some have few utensils and bedding with them, a clear indication it is a home for them.
