Amid the wrangling will the Jubilee party that has seen the emergence of two political camps: Kieleweke and Tanga Tanga, Deputy President William Ruto finds himself at the centre of the storm.
The Kieleweke wing is supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga after their 2018 political deal that gave birth to the Building Bridges Initiative.
On the other hand, the Tanga Tanga brigade is pro-Ruto in his 2022 presidential quest.
With these groups pursuing different political agendas, Dr Ruto will no doubt have to play it safe come 2020 to keep alive his statehouse dreams.
Toning down on his political activities is one of the things that the DP should do differently in 2020. Having been accused repeatedly by his critics for allegedly undermining the President by constant politicking, Dr Ruto will have to change the strategy. By so doing, his Kieleweke critics will have no substantive accusation against him.
Secondly, the DP will have to reduce many church activities, especially donations. For the better part of 2019, Ruto's allies have accused him of allegedly using the church to dump his ill-gotten wealth.
Just barely a week ago, in a Tv interview, ODM leader Raila Odinga claimed that "some people carrying money in sacks" into churches should be investigated by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. The statement was seemingly directed at Dr. Ruto, who fired back in a tweet.
With church donations portraying the DP as a corrupt person, it is high time he avoids as a way to clean his image.
Further, the DP should wholeheartedly support the Building Bridges Initiative report. In the past, his rivals have accused him of being anti- BBI. By so doing, his critics will have no ground to fire shots at him.
Finally, he should instruct his lieutenants to stop frequent attacks on Raila, which many believe are directed at the President.
Dr. Ruto's move to do this will no doubt improve his political fortunes going forward.
