The appointment was confirmed by Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru.

Bilal is expected to transform the corporation after it was put on the spot over technical insolvency by the office of the Auditor General in 2016.

Financial challenges have affected the operations of the broadcaster.

The managing director position was left vacant after Mr Waithaka Waihenya retired following the completion of his term in office.

Mr Paul Jilani was appointed in acting capacity before the new appointment was made.

In a statement, CS Mucheru exuded confidence that the new MD is the right man for the job.

Bilal is expected to use his vast knowledge and experience to transform the state-owned broadcaster.

In 2018, workers at the broadcaster downed their tools to demand better pay. They faulted the management of slashing their salaries and vowed not to change their stand until their needs are addressed. The management, however, dismissed the allegations terming them baseless.

Bilal is a former Nation Media Group editor.  During his tenure, he enjoyed good working relations with other employees of the firm. His performance track record has won him admiration.
