Former Youth Fund boss Gor Semelang’o has called on the government to create an enabling environment where businesses can thrive.
Addressing the press in Nakuru on Thursday after a meeting with Nakuru leadership of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Semelang'o noted that the economy is poor and the government has to address the gaps.
He says this is the only way that the youths, women and people living with disability to get jobs through various programs.
“Government should create an enabling environment for business to thrive. Chamber looks forward to work with government to create employment for young people, women and persons with disability” said Semelang’o.
The flamboyant businessman who has been endorsed by the Nakuru leadership of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the position of National vice-chair also wants the government to subcontract the registration of companies and business names to the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He says he will also push for the government to make compulsory for the re-introduction of trade licenses and they be issued strictly by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry chapters.
“We want to lobby the government so that the registration of companies and business names can be done by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. We also want it compulsory for the re-introduction of trade licenses and they are issued strictly by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry chapters” said Semelang’o.
On the recent debate on the government over-borrowing and incurring huge debts, the Former Youth Fund boss said the only way the government will come out of the crisis is by focusing on farming and also the creation of export processing zones.
He said over-importation of goods from other countries has a negative impact on the country’s economy hence should be addressed through the creation of the export processing zone.
“A country that exports more than it imports makes a lot of money and the economy will grow. We should, therefore, think of farming and also the creation of export processing zone” he said.
Mr.Semelang’o is seeking the position of Vice President of the Kenya National Chamber of commerce, a position previously held by Richard Ngatia who is now the president-elect for Kenya National Chamber of Commerce.
Ngatia succeeds Kiprono Kittony, who has served two terms amounting to seven years. Ngatia was confirmed unopposed after receiving the backing of three chamber aspirants, including chamber deputy chairman James Muriu.
Before the announcement, Ngatia served as vice chairman for the chamber.
He is the former chair for the Nairobi chamber.
