Homa Bay Women Rep Gladys Wanga has revealed how she was able to avoid falling into the trap of 'sponsors' during her stint as a student at Kenyatta University.
The outspoken politician Wednesday told a mainstream television station that she had to do menial jobs at Kenyatta University such as slashing grass under the university's work-study programme which helped her cater for her expenses.
"When we were in the university, there was always the work-study programme where the needy student could actually work to be able to raise school fees but also raise upkeep. So the university provided, I remember I worked at the cyber at Kenyatta University and slashing grass. You know, I was given a portion. You are given a portion and paid thirty per hour and you slash as much as you can. If we have that kind of programmes people do not have to feel like they have to find sponsors or do these things in order to have their upkeep in these tertiary institutions," Wanga said.
Her words come in the wake of gruesome murders involving young women that continue to shock the conscience of the Kenyan public.
She called for parents to engage in dialogue with their children when they join the university to ensure that they don't end up in problems with sponsors.
Also in the panel was Murang'a senator Irungu Kang'ata who said that the society had the responsibility of teaching students the value of hard work.
