Apart from his love for books, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has as well made a name for himself as a skilled leader and politician whose activities date back to 1992.

The Makerere University alumnus has also made a name for himself as a die-hard follower and supporter of opposition leader Raila Odinga, hence his elevation in Luo Nyanza politics which is entirely allied to the former Premier.

However, very little is said about his love and activeness in English literature, especially a rather controversial poem he composed during his schooling days at the Ugandan university.

In the poem named ‘Daughter Of the Lowland’ and  whose phallic imagery is unequaled, Nyong’o brings himself out as a radical, a characteristic which according to his history, has always been in him since his childhood days.

Here is the poem as was seen by a Daily Nation publication dated May 2012.

I cannot let my testicle be crushed/ when I am wide awake/ By the ghosts of an alien clan/ In the half-lighted boom cave / No!/ When I unsheathe the family spear/ And unfeather the poison-horned arrow;/ When I expose the daughter of the low land/ To village gossip and contempt/ Then the books that I have read smash my testicles in my sleep/ my testicles have not been smashed by heavy books.

Nyong’o completed his undergraduate studies at the university and was awarded a 1st class honours degree in Political Science, before proceeding to the University of Chicago where he did his Masters and completed his PHD in 1977.

He would later join politics, moving through the ranks of elective politics to his current seat as a county chief.
