Ndaragwa Member of Parliament Jeremiah Kioni has come out to call for the redesigning of the new notes before their mass printing and release to citizens.

This comes only days after Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor Patrick Njoroge unveiled the newly designed denominations of Sh50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000.

Speaking on Wednesday, just like those who have as well opposed the notes, he took issue with the inclusion of founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's image in the tender bills.

Kioni observed that the same goes against article 231 of the 2010 constitution, which clearly states that no person's image should be in any Kenyan currency.

"Article 231 inasema kuwe na uhakikisho kwamba hamna mtu yeyoye ambaye picha yake itapatikana pale (Article 231 states that no image of a person should be seen in the currency)," he said.

Kioni was speaking on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show on Wednesday night.

He said that the article seeks to ensure that all Kenyans feel included, and remove the feeling that a section is more preferred by glorifying specific persons.

He termed this the reason behind the abolition of Kenyatta Day and its replacement with Heroes Day, saying that the plan was to make Kenyans identify with themselves as a people.

"Hii ndio maana tulitoa Kenyatta Day and kuweka Mashujaa Day maana watu fulani walikuwa wanauliza mbona sisi pia tulipigania uhuru lakini anayeonekana ni Kenyatta.

(This is also the reason behind the abolition of Kenyatta day and its replacement with Heroes Day. Some Kenyans were beginning to ask why its only Kenyatta receiving the credit yet they also flight for independence)," he said.
