According to reports from his family, Annan died aged 80 after a short illness.
Annan will be remembered in Nairobi as a great peacemaker who brokered the Kibaki-Raila truce at a time the country was headed into a civil war.
He was the seventh UN secretary general between 1997 and 2006 and won the Nobel peace prize for his humanitarian work.
