The government through the Ministry of Health has recalled Nuteez peanut butter from the market across the country after tests indicated the products contain a contaminated batch.
The government chemists department informed the Ministry of Interior on January 29, 2019 that the tests on the product confirmed that it was unfit for human consumption.
“The peanut butter exceeds the maximum required limit for total aflatoxins (10pb) hence not fit for human consumption,” read the Government Chemists' letter.
This report prompted the Director of Public Health Kepha Ombacho to, on Thursday 31, 2019 direct all County Public Health Officers to ensure Nuteez peanut butter is removed from the market and surrendered to the government laboratory.
“The referred batch number of the peanut should be removed from the market and all other batches of the same samples be submitted to the laboratory…,” read part of the circular directed to all county Public Health officers.
However, Jetlak Foods Limited which is the parent company of peanut butter brand ‘Nuteez’ has refuted the findings by the government maintaining that their products are of high quality and safe for use.
“We wish to re-assure our esteemed customers that Jetlak Foods limited are prescribed to the highest standards of quality and we remain committed to manufacturing the best quality products," the processor battled in a press release.
They, however, promised to carry out investigations into the government claims upon receiving a detailed report from the Ministry.
