Police on Wednesday morning arrested a 75-year-old lady after human bones were recovered from her house in Chulaimbo.
The lady identified as Margaret Ongasi has been keeping a human skull, the hip-bone, and a thumb bone in a sack inside her mud-thatched house.
She appealed to the police to free her, claiming that she had found the remains while she was cultivating in her garden.
According to residents, her 5-year-old grand daughter on Tuesday disclosed the secret to locals who were fetching water from a borehole near Margaret’s home, while she was away.
The residents alerted police who stormed into the unsuspecting widow’s homestead on Wednesday morning, securing the fossils in the process.
According to one of the family members, the woman is likely to have been using the fossils for witchcraft purposes, since she had fallen out with her relatives over the same.
“She has differences with most of our relatives. They think she is responsible for the death of my two cousins,” he said.
Speaking at the suspect’s home, area chief Linus Oundo rebuked the lady, adding that being in possession of human remains was the wicked thing to ever exist in the area.
“Where does she obtain these bones? Is she killing people? We don't care whether someone is old. Everybody must face the law” said the chief.
