Female students at Moi University have been cautioned and warned against procuring an abortion.
This is after a body of Caroline Mwatha, a human rights activist was found at Nairobi City mortuary. The young female activist is alleged to have died while procuring an abortion at New Njiru community centre.
Following the incident, some of the final year students at the Kesses-based university took the opportunity to advise fellow ladies on why they should think twice when it comes to abortion.
Linda Achieng, a student in the School of Arts and Social Sciences cited the increased health risk as the top reason why ladies should not terminate their pregnancies.
“Most of the doctors who carry out the abortion especially in a rural area like here (Kesses) are not actually qualified. This, therefore, puts the lady at risk as the doctor may even use unsterilized objects. Apart from that, we have excessive bleeding and blood clots in the uterus both of which pose a very serious risk on the lady’s health. Young ladies especially those in campus should therefore not even think of abortion,” Achieng advised.
Some of the ladies, on the other hand, are worried that Caroline Mwatha’s fate, if it's true she died while procuring abortion, may actually be the same to a good number of ladies who go down the path of abortion.
“The worst thing that can happen to a lady during an abortion is death. Consequently, I don’t think a wise young university lady would really gamble with her life and risk dying. Ladies should, therefore, be cautious when dealing with pregnancies but whatever happens, abortion is not on the list of options,” Caren Mwanzia, an engineering student stated.
Apart from the deadly effects of abortion, is there any other valid reason as to why ladies should not practice abortion?
“Well, abortion is a sin and it is biblically not accepted. It is also not morally right. So I think we should not just focus on the side effects but also put more attention on the moral righteousness of the whole subject,” Rita Cherop, a student pursuing a degree course in Education stated.
Moi University has in the past reported cases of abortions among the students. The students especially those in the final year can, therefore, relate to the situation where one dies while trying to abort for any reason she may have.
The young ladies at the Kesses-based institution have been advised to stay away from abortion and if possible report any cases that relate to the subject.
