The society has oppressed women for centuries and the Kenyan Coastal region is also notorious in ensuring that women remain in the private sphere.

However, several women are breaking these cultural chains. Mashirima Kapombe and Grace Msalame are some of the female role models with coastal roots.

Mashirima was born in Voi Town, Taita Taveta County. Her primary schooling was in Central Kenya after her parents relocated due to work demands.

She proceeded to Karatina’s Bishop Gatimu Ngandu for her high school education before joining Daystar University, Athi River. She graduated with a Communication and Electronic Media degree in 2012.

Kapombe is a star that most coastal girls admire. Her success is motivating girls from coastal communities where male dominance is still affecting the society.

Another woman flying high in life is Grace Msalame. She is a motivation that girls from this region should emulate.

Her success has made several people claim her ownership by deviating her real origin. However, she is not Ugandan, as some people want us to believe. She is a perfect mix of coastal and central Kenya genes.

Grace is a product of St. Christopher’s High School. She then joined Daystar University to pursue a Communication and Electronic Media degree.
