An prosecutor has been fined for Sh200, 000 by an Eldoret Court after he was found guilty of engaging in bribery.
James Naburuk Sichangi was found guilty of soliciting the bribe from Ms Joyce Wanjiku, claiming that it was an inducement to support the bail of her husband Fred Wabuoba.
Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa heard that the crime was done on November 15, 2015, where the accused demanded for Sh60, 000 for Wabuoba who was charged at a Kitale court.
The court also found Sichangi guilty of keeping Sh30, 000 set to be used as evidence in the case, with the judge ruling that the crimes go against the Ethics and Economics Crime Act.
Justice Obulutsa ruled that the accused will spend two years in jail for the crimes, after he was found with treated money given to Wanjiku by Ethics and Anti Corruption Officers (EACC ) to give to the accused as bait.
The accused was charged with five counts of crime relating to the same, three of which the court found provable.
“The court finds that 1st, 3rd and 5th counts have not been proved beyond reasonable doubt of which the accused is acquitted. In respect to the second and fourth count they have been proved beyond a reasonable doubt,” said the judge, according to the Standard.
Sichangi was nabbed at the Kitale Law Courts on November 13, immediately after receiving the marked money.
This was after Wanjiku reported him to EACC officers for demanding the bribe.
