President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Arab ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum met secretly in Dubai over the gold scam case. The three met as the ruler complained about cartels in Kenya who were taking his nephew Ali Zandi in circles after being contracted to help his gold trading company, Zlivia Gold to airlift the commodity from Congo via Kenya to Dubai.
The meeting took place on Saturday, April 27 as the two Kenyan leaders returned from China. The Standard said the Dubai ruler learnt of Kenyatta’s stopover in Dubai and decided to meet him and air his grievances about Kenyan authorities who had ‘withheld Zlivia Company’s gold consignment’.Dubious businessmen and politicians who are running gold scams in Kenya conning foreigners millions of shillings are said to have convinced Zandi, who is a nephew of the Dubai ruler, that their gold had been impounded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).Authorities, however, say the Dubai ruler was conned as there was no such cargo.“During the meeting, the Dubai ruler is said to have shared with Uhuru the audio that captured a conversation between his nephew Ali Zandi and the Kenyan contact, and also explained how they had been taken in circles in Nairobi over the gold consignment that was to be trucked from DRC Congo and flown out via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport,” the paper reported. The meeting with the Dubai ruler saw President Kenyatta call his security men to State House when he returned to the country and ordered that those running con games in Nairobi be arrested. That is how the crackdown on fake gold syndicate started.
