The county government of Uasin Gishu has been running a campaign to sensitize farmers on the need to diversify in their farming activities.

This is in a bid to address the overdependence on cereal farming that is dominant not only in Uasin Gishu but the entire North Rift region, the country’s food basket.

To enable you to earn more from farming, here are the five alternative cash crops that have been proved to do well in several sub-counties in Uasin Gishu, guaranteeing a farmer good money;

Pyrethrum

Due to its nature where it can only be grown under certain temperatures, pyrethrum is advised to be cultivated in Kesses, Ainabkoi and Moiben sub-counties

Coffee

The crop is mainly grown in high altitude areas hence it can do well in Turbo, Ainabkoi, Soy and Kapseret sub-counties.

Hass Avocados

Termed as the newest cash crop in the market, the Hass variety has a limitless market in Europe. It can be grown in any part of the Uasin Gishu county.

Banana Tissue Culture

Recently, banana has become an important cash crop for semi-intensive medium-scale farmers who supply the urban markets in the country. If you live in Turbo, Soy, Moiben or Kapseret, then this is the kind of farming you need to venture in.

Macadamia

The macadamia nuts farming has a relatively low input capital and a high earning potential. It is also highly drought-resistant crop. This crop does well in Turbo, Ainabkoi, Soy, Moiben and parts of Kesses sub-county.
