Photos of the encounter have been the subject of unending controversy with scores of social media users accusing the DP of chereography and PR gimmicks.

Mr Joseph Mutua, speaking to the media, denied reports peddled on social media that he is DP Ruto's bodyguard.

"What I had in my pocket was a phone and a nail. People thought that it was a walkie-talkie but it wasn't,"  Mutua said.

Garissa residents have been weighing in on the development.

Here is a sample of what they had to say:

"Those who peddled that propaganda on social media should be ashamed of themselves," Halima Juno said.

"They wanted to soil the DP's name but they have totally failed. The truth is finally out," Karim Osman said.

"To what end were those sharing the photos doing so? Sad!" Peter Jamal said.

"I knew this was shameless propaganda. Now we have the truth," Said Gabra said.

"No matter what, the truth always shines through," Salim Galgalo said.

"I had my doubts. Now I have learnt that not everything you see on social media is true," Dan Dio said.

"I don't support Ruto but I find the attempts to soil his name unfortunate," Latif Mohamed said.
