Six people were on Friday arrested in Eldoret town accused of selling meat that is unfit for human consumption.
The six, all men, allegedly sell meat from dead cows as well as those with poor health conditions.
They were arrested after Uasin Gishu health officials and police officers raided a temporary slaughterhouse situated near Eldoret town centre where four carcasses and six weakly cows were discovered.
According to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the cows are brought secretly and slaughtered very late in the evening.
"The beef commonly referred to as OKOA is normally sold to hotel owners and some residents at cheaper prices," said the source.
County officials led by Health Services County Executive (CeC) Evelyn Rotich and director veterinary services Philip Biamah said the meat from the cows was not fit for human consumption and no movement permit had been issued to anyone to transport the cows to Eldoret.
The officials confirmed that four of the cows were dead and six were very weak and should have been disposed of.
"We urge residents to be cautious and should not just buy meat from anywhere. They should also report such cases for action to be taken," said the CeC.
