A middle-aged woman is fighting for her life in hospital after she was burnt by angry villagers for failing to take her sick 17-year-old daughter to hospital.
The incident happened on Monday at Matangamano village in Nyabiosi area, Taracha in Kisii County.
Locals said they tried to persuade the woman Dolphin Nyaboke to take her daughter to a hospital in vain.
"Nyaboke ignored locals who have tried hard to ensure her daughter is taken to hospital. As locals, we could not condone her anymore. We set her on fire so that she can die before her daughter," stated local James Obare.
Mr. Obare said Nyaboke was lucky to have been rescued by the area chief.
"Were it not for the area chief, Nyaboke could be past tense by now," noted Obare.
Area assistant chief Kennedy Atemba condemned the incident saying the locals who participated in burning the woman are being traced.
"Locals could have taken the sick to hospital and apprehend the mother and surrender her to authorities to be charged over negligence but, not burning her," he said.
Atemba assured that the victim is responding well to medication.
"The burn wounds were dressed up and she is doing well. Parents should not neglect their children," he added.
