Last week, Odinga jetted from New Delhi, India where he had represented the government of Kenya in his capacity as 'former Prime Minister'.

And in sidelines on Tuesday, Odinga held talks with South Africa's First Lady Tshepo Motsepe, Mandela's daughter Zenani and business mogul Aliko Dangote.

"Raila today held talks with First Lady Tshepo Motsepe, Zenani Mandela and Aliko Dangote," wrote his spokesman Dennis Onyango.

After the celebrations, in which Barack Obama, who had just concluded his two day visit in Kenya, was chief guest, Raila expressed his satisfaction in Mandela's legacy.

"It was an honour to attend the memorable and inspiring 16th Annual Nelson Mandela Day lecture that was delivered by Obama," he wrote on his Twitter.

Later on Wednesday, Onyango added, Raila will deliver a speech at Mandela's Transkei home in Kwazulu Natal.

Raila's relationship with South Africa dates many years back and in addition, Cyril Ramaphosa, the current president, is a friend and business partner.
