Ambitious Deputy President William Ruto has embarked on a strategy to reach out to regions believed to be allied to Raila Odinga ahead of 2022, an intelligence officer has revealed.
In the strategy, Ruto is banking on grassroot leaders among them MCAs, governors and MPs who he believes will deliver.
"We have a concrete plan. Right now, meeting grassroot leaders from Nyanza, Western, Coast and Northern Kenya is the best remedy as we observe our brothers from the mountain.
"They seem unpredictable thus the reason to bank on other friends. We already have a team of campaigners who identify and recruit aggressive grassroot leaders to our team," he said in confidence.
Another strategy, he says, reaching out to NASA leaders Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula, Kalonzo Musyoka and to a large extent Raila Odinga.
Recently, former Kakamega Senator Bonnie Khalwale openly asked Mr. Mudavadi to back Ruto's bid in 2022.
"We can't win presidency alone. Let's work with Ruto and deliver deputy position. That is the only way out," he said over the weekend.
Mt. Kenya region has showed mixed signals towards his presidential bid, with the team convening at Naivasha on Monday to discuss Uhuru Kenyatta's future.
Even though a sizeable number of leaders have been working with him, a few critics have openly ruled out the region's support.
"It's about reaching out to other friends. You can't depend on one region. Everything is on the table and the team is confident of support from NASA regions," he noted.
