Regarded as 'Nyamira Finest', Matiang'i was on Tuesday promoted by President Uhuru Kenyatta to head a critical cabinet sub committee; National Development Implementation and Communication, which will now supervise government projects.

And North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko says Dr Matiang'i should now try to unite Gusii leadership to speak from one voice for his future political survival.

"That was a great step in his public service. He now needs to work with everyone from Gusii if at all he wants to move forward his career. Even with goodwill from outside, he still needs us.

"Without a united Gusii community, he will perish after this government. As MPs, we are willing to accommodate him all the time. But he must show us he's willing to see the region developing regardless of our differences," he said.

The Gusii community has remained divided since 2002 when former powerful Finance Minister Simon Nyachae contested for presidency under Ford People party which has since diminished.

Apparently, Matiang'i served as Nyachae's advisor and his current elevation puts him at pole position to inherit the large voting block of Abagusii community should he intend to contest for president.

For the last decade, Raila Odinga has enjoyed monopoly in Gusii community in presidential election, beating both Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta in that last three outings.
