Joyce wa Mama has taken the Kikuyu benga music by storm since her entry to the music industry ten years ago.
The soft -spoken lady has continued to enjoy a growing fan base with the release of hit after hit.
The latest 'wendo wi cama' (love is sweet) collabo with Samidoh has been a hit trending at number one on Youtube. Her other popular songs are 'Wendo waku ndituragia' and 'wari wakwa'.
Joyce was born in Kongoini village in Kiharu, Murang'a County with her sister Jackie Mathia.
In an exclusive interview with Jeff Kuria, she reveals that her journey in music has not been a walk in the park. She advises other aspiring musicians not to lose hope maintaining that success doesn't come on a silver platter.
The mother of a seven-year-old son, Telvin Mathia, discloses that she was introduced to music by renowned benga musician Wangari wa Kabera in 2009.
She says that the musician housed her when she came to Nairobi to seek greener pastures. She acknowledges Wa Kabera's role in her career after she sang as a back-up singer in her band before joining John Njagi.
She recounts how she once sang as the main vocalist after Wa Kabera had fallen ill in a busy restaurant in Ngara. She adds that this motivated her and she realised she was cut out for much more.
During the interview, she refuted claims that she had been married to a fellow musician, John Njagi. Joyce added that their relationship was only in music that they did together.
