If there’s one thing your mama mboga regards, on the same level as well fermented phlegm, it is one shilling coins. They are so valueless that a mama mboga will reject even if you take a truckload of them to her.

The most annoying thing is that the mama mboga will not hesitate to give change in the form of one shilling coins. Supermarkets have upped their game. They give sweets and candies. A right-thinking person will wonder: when did candies become legal tender?

This observation comes in light with the launching of new generation currency by the president. I have half expected that one shilling coins have been phased out. Instead, they are there, complete with a giraffe portrait.

Why should we have a currency that has been rejected by the commoner? Why should we have things that cannot buy anything? In light of the new currency, the one shilling coin should be phased out, just like the fifty cent coins. It makes no sense that it is substituted with candies, yet it cannot be accepted back.

Mama mbogas and supermarkets have since declared one shilling coins obsolete. There is no need to keep them in circulation. The Central Bank of Kenya should just declare it obsolete.
