Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday asked former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to concentrate on his mandate as an opposition leader and leave him alone.
The two leaders are embroiled in a vicious battle ahead of 2022 presidential polls. While Raila is yet to declare his intentions, Dr Ruto has been traversing the country pushing for his agenda.
At Eldama Ravine on Sunday, Ruto insisted his critics among them Raila Odinga are not well versed in the roles of a Deputy President under the new constitution.
He said his decision to traverse the country is guided by the fact that he's a principal assistant to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"I am the first deputy president in the history of the country. Those who came before me were vice-presidents. I do not blame those who are questioning how I operate since they have never seen a deputy president in their lives," Ruto said.
"No one else swore using the Bible to discharge duties of the deputy president but me ... And everyone else should focus on their mandates. If you are an opposition leader, do your job as an opposition leader," Ruto said.
Mr Odinga is keen with his MoU with President Uhuru Kenyatta and has lately been working closely with the Head of State. The closeness has rattled Dr Ruto's camp.
In his previous responses, Odinga has often termed Ruto 'a corrupt leader' whose integrity is questionable. The two recently met at State House when South Sudan President Salva Kiir visited.
