One of the most unanticipated strategies is how he dealt with the 1982 coup attempt by the Kenya Air Forces led by General Ochuka. With the help of the army, President Moi survived the coup attempt and he could not risk another attempt forcing him to go back to the drawing board.

Mzee  Moi started by getting rid officers from some communities that he deemed as a threat. At this point, his anger was high that he detained thousands of soldiers and recruiting new ones.

Another strategy to deal with the coup was to plan for the removal of the Attorney General Charles Njonjo. He branded him as an enemy and traitor of the nation. As expected, this plan never failed since Njonjo was forced to resign after the allegation.

He also intensified the activities of KANU youth wing which conducted recruitment to the party and making it impossible to trade without the membership card. At this point, it was either you are in the government or in detention if you opposed the Nyayo government.
