Duale alleges that proponents of the referendum have ill agenda for Kenyans and North Eastern people.

The Jubilee MP further claims that there is a plot to reduce the number of constituencies through a referendum.

He said that reducing the constituencies will deny Kenyans development and representation.

The leader of the majority in the National Assembly maintained that the referendum push is not in the interests of Kenyans.

“I am aware of the scheme by proponents of a referendum to frustrate the gains made especially on devolution,” he said in Garissa Town on Saturday.

Duale said that North Eastern has benefited immensely from devolution, adding that he will fight against any attempts to merge counties in the region.

“As the patron of the pastoralists communities I will be at the forefront fighting any attempt to reduce our representation,” he added.

Duale asked Kenyans to defend devolution, noting that it is the only way they will get services.

The referendum debate has heated up with several leaders backing Raila Odinga’s push to review the 2010 constitution.

Raila has been quoted saying that the referendum is unstoppable.

The former Prime Minister says that referendum was part of his handshake deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

On Saturday, Deputy President William Ruto gave surprising support for the referendum.

Ruto said that he is not opposed to changing the 2010 constitution but he has issues in the manner in which the referendum is being pushed.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC Party leader Musalia Mudavadi, and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula are among top politicians opposing Raila’s referendum push.
