The former Prime Minister initially known for his noisy and forceful mode of politicking has since switched techniques, after his March 9 truce and seems to have softened up.

According to Bichachi, the leader seems to have embarked on a new plan to remain relevant and possibly rip big in the much anticipated poll.

He says that with regards to the changing political landscape, the veteran politician has decided to embrace reconciliation and respect as his new winning formula.

"The political landscape has completely changed and it cannot be business as usual. Raila could be trying to rebrand himself as a candidate who is not confrontational,” he told the Saturday Standard.

Among the things Raila has been silently pushing for is a referendum to among others, shift to the parliamentary governance system from the current presidential one.

Himself and his forces also want the expansion of the executive to introduce among others, the Prime Ministerial office and those of his deputies.

The push for constitutional changes has since attracted national interest and twice received what looks like an endorsement from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking in Kisumu on December 13 and in an interview in Mombasa on Friday, Uhuru stressed on the need for the nation to undergo changes to eliminate the 'winner takes it all' system.

Bichachi now argues that under the changes, Raila will have it easier ascending to power and could easily elevate himself to the Prime Minister's slot.

“In a parliamentary system, he may not have to be a candidate, he just needs to be the leader of his party and ensures that his party wins majority seats for him to become a prime minister,” he added.

The push is, however, facing opposition from forces allied to Deputy President William Ruto.
