A politician is in trouble after investigations revealed that he had contacts with some of the key suspects in the brutal attacks that took place in Matungu.
According to detectives, the politician sent two suspects up to Sh150, 000.
The investigations showed that one of the suspects received Sh120, 000 from the politician while another got Sh30, 000 from the man.
The one who received Sh120, 000 is being treated as the ring leader of the attacks and was reportedly coordinating them from a hideout in Nairobi.
“One of the politicians was arrested after the police found out he had sent a total of Sh120,000 to the suspect arrested in Nairobi. The same politician had also sent Sh30,000 to another suspect, who was coordinating activities of the gang in Matungu,” a police source told the Standard.
Several politicians had been arrested in connection with the attacks by Sunday.
Among those who were arrested are Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, former Sports CS Rashid Echesa, Matungu MP Justus Murunga, and Mayoni MCA Libinus Oduor.
It is not clear, who among the four made the transaction, since the police did not divulge any names. The police, however, noted that the said politician could be charged with aiding, and abetting murder.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i deployed GSU officers in the area to deal with criminals who had fed residents with violence every night.
Up to 20 people were killed in the area during the attacks and others left with life threatening injuries.
