Speaking on Tuesday, Senator Ledama described what Wetangula did as "name-dropping".

He contended that Wetangula mentioned the name of President Uhuru and veteran opposition leader Raila in order to sound important.

"This was clearly an issue of name-dropping. If you listen to that tape to the person who was speaking who everybody knows was Wetangula, you will understand that he was name-dropping.

This is a culture where somebody name-drops in order to receive favours or sound important, " the firebrand senator said.

In the phone recording, the former Senate Minority Leader is heard mentioning the name of President Uhuru and Raila.

Wetangula, who traveled to China for an anti-corruption summit, has been mentioned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations as a person of interest.

Ledama called on politicians not to politicise the fake gold scandal and warned that failure to resolve issues could harm the diplomatic ties between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Rashid al-Maktoum is among the people said to have been conned.

A number of people involved in the fake gold business have been arrested to face charges.
