Eliud Kipchoge has been named IAAF Male Athlete of the year 2018 at the awards ceremony held in Monaco on Tuesday evening, the headquarters of the of the athletics world governing body.
Kipchoge who is the world Marathon record holder won the award after setting a new record this year of 2 hours, 01 minutes and 39 seconds.
“This award means a lot to me, it shows the significant of my entire career,” said the overjoyed Kipchoge.
He is the second Kenyan to win this award since David Rudisha in 2010.
Following his win, President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Opposition Chief Raila Odinga took to Twitter to congratulate Kipchoge.
"Congratulations @EliudKipchoge for winning the 2018 IAAF Male Athlete of the Year Award. Your dominance in the marathon has not only propelled you to the history books of icons, but has also ensured Kenya remains a world leader in Athletics. We are very proud of you," he posted.
Odinga, on his part, thanked the marathoner for flying the country's flag high and urged him to continue inspiring young Kenyans.
"Congratulations @EliudKipchoge on being named the 2018 IAAF Male Athlete of the Year last night after setting the marathon world record in Berlin earlier this year. You have done Kenya proud. Keep inspiring our youth," he tweeted.
