Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has been arrested by law enforcement authorities over alleged hate remarks he made a few months ago.
The outspoken governing Jubilee legislator was arrested on Tuesday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives and taken away for interrogation.
His utterances were allegedly made at Kilibwoni Primary School on August 17, 2019.
His arrest was confirmed by the DCI through a post on its Twitter account that read: "NANDI SENATOR Hon. Samson Kiprotich CHERARGEI has been arrested by @DCI_Kenya Detectives following his hateful utterances at Kilibwoni Primary School on 17th August 2019. The suspect will be taken to court today to face charges of ethnic contempt c/section 62(1)…"
In uttering the alleged inflammatory remarks, the senator violated Section 62(1) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act as well as incitement to violence contrary to Section 96(a) of the Penal Code.
Senator Cherargei will be arraigned in court to face the charges against him.
The DP Ruto-backing lawmaker has accused the law enforcement authorities of political persecution.
A few months ago he was arrested after he made comments in a public place that were deemed to be inflammatory.
He had been accused of threatening those who do not support the presidential bid of the Deputy President William Ruto, who is expected to run for the presidency in 2022.
“Those who are fighting the Deputy President, we (sic) are profiling you ... if you fight [the] DP you’re fighting us. Don’t think he doesn’t have supporters, " he said.
He was later released after settling his bail terms.
