The media has been blamed for unknowingly propagating the ideas of terrorists whenever they attack innocent civilians and therefore need to change the way the violence is covered.

Speaking during a Prevention and countering violent extremism (PCVE) training held in Nyamira Monday, County Commissioner Amos Mariba noted the way terrorism has been covered in in the recent past has to be changed so as they (terrorists) are not seen to be ‘praised’ in causing deaths.

The training drew leaders from different religions and other stakeholders with Nyamira County to discuss on ways of countering terrorism.

Mariba said instead the media has to look for a way of frustrating them by not giving them (terrorists) publicity and instead counter the attacks with positive ideas like the strides the government has taken in eliminating terrorists and addressing the enabling factors of terrorism.

“The media should change on how they cover the terrorism cases, we should not focus on the damage they have caused us as a nation but we can also frustrate their efforts by even giving them a black out instead.

"We must defeat them and they have no space in our community nor our county," said Mariba.

Mariba noted that the terrorists have changed mode of recruiting their members and now resolved to use social media in reaching their target and therefore need for mainstream media to improvise new methods of countering terrorists’ advances.

The PCVE program supported by the Netherlands Government is run in 10 counties of the Western region.
