Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has rubbished reports that he is to blame for MPs failure to approve the two-thirds Gender Bill.
Duale says that as National Assembly Majority leader, he did his work by tabling the Bill in the House for voting.
He said that he saw it was wise to seek for the vote to be postponed since majority of MPs were not present.
“It was wise to have the voting postponed on grounds of lacking quorum rather than allowing voting only for the Bill to flop,” he said.
According to Duale, only 212 MPs were present in the house by the time he applied for the vote to be postponed.
Duale says that the Bill needed support of 233 MPs for it to sail through.
He noted that his request for deferment was in line with standing order 141.
“A loss would have meant that the Bill could only be re-introduced afresh and the earliest being in June 2019,” he said on Wednesday.
The Garissa lawmaker said that his decision to seek for postponement of the Bill was done after consultations with the House top leadership.
