Shock and grief have engulfed a village in Marakwet West in Elgeyo Marakwet County following the death of a form four student.
The KCSE candidate died after he allegedly consumed methanol in a school laboratory.
Another student, a form 3, who is said to have consumed the chemical used in the laboratory for acid tests was also left sightless.
The incident happened at Barsumbat Mixed Day Secondary School.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Education director Evans Onyancha who confirmed the incident, however, refuted the claims that the two had consumed methanol.
"We suspect they consumed illicit alcohol from a nearby village that borders the school and that is what might have caused the death and loss of sight to the other student," said Onyancha, Tuesday.
However, according to the Health County Executive in Elgeyo Marakwet Kiprono Chepkok, the two consumed methanol.
Chepkot expressed fears that the student who had lost sight as a result of the incident might not be able to regain it back.
