Mr Gathara said that it was not the fault of Kenyans if members of Parliament cannot manage their cash.

"Dear @dailynation,Some verification would be great. Kaluma lied on #Sidebar when he said MPigs are paid "only" Sh300k but it's not our fault if they can't manage their cash. Also, which are these places they should not be found but are OK for the Kenyans who elect and pay them?" Patrick Gathara's tweet read.

Mr Kaluma had argued during an interview with Nation that MPs in Kenya were not as well paid as has been claimed in some quarters.

The MP went ahead to claim that he had at once dropped MPs in Kilimani only to find them living in servant quarters where they slept on double-deckers.

"Some MPs are living down along River-road. I once dropped a colleague in Kilimani only to find three MPs squatting in an SQ, they have put double deckers like in school dormitories," Kaluma said.

The debate on the pay of members of Parliament has been reignited by an attempt by the legislators to raise their salaries without involving the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) which is mandated by the Constitution to set salaries of all state officers.
