Mandera Governor Ali Roba is serving his second and final term in office and he is yet to hint on the political plans he has after his term expires in 2022.But as the succession debate take center stage, Roba is likely to play a bigger role on how North Eastern region will vote in the 2022 presidential election.A close ally of Deputy President William Ruto, Roba is likely to spearhead his (Ruto's) 2022 presidential campaigns.Last month during the Pastoralist Leadership Summit in Garissa, Roba said North Eastern will stand firmly behind Jubilee candidate in 2022.He also said the region is likely to form a political outfit to cement its unity and speak in one voice in order to get a share of national leadership.Governor Roba is among North Eastern leaders who have praised devolution terming it a 'blessing' to Kenyans especially those in marginalized areas. The Mandera County boss has also warned against plot to reduce the number of counties in the push to amend the 2010 constitution through referendum.
There is also speculations that Roba is being fronted by the Somali community in North Eastern to be Ruto’s presidential running mate in the 2022 election.
Governor Roba is perceived as loyal politician who is able to push the Muslim and Somali agenda in the national politics.
A pilot by profession, Governor Roba is likely to remain politically active after his term end in 2022 whether he vies for an elective seat or not.
