The county contributes the highest percentage of Kenyan agricultural products both farm produce and livestock ones. On the Livestock farming, it is doing quite well but only faced challenges on Poultry farming.

Below are some of the major reasons why poultry farming projects do not succeed well in Uasin Gishu;

Lack of knowledge

Most residents rush to farming after seeing their neighbours' harvests. They do not have a good knowledge of how poultry farming should be done. A majority of the locals do not take time to learn how to effectively engage in poultry farming.

Lack of persistence

Farmers in Uasin Gishu are used for large-scale farming where they harvest high yields and many would not have the patience to wait for some time before earning from poultry. There is also the fear of diseases and lack of market for poultry products.

The high cost of feeds

This has been a pain in the neck for most farmers who wish to enter into poultry farming. The high cost of feeds and poultry equipment derails poultry rearing. Farmers find it too costly to handle such expenses hence relies on farm production which the county government of Uasin Gishu subsidize its production cost.

Lack of market

A market issue has become a big block to poultry farming in Uasin Gishu. This is because farmers are discouraged when they produce but have no market to sell them. This is demoralising at the same time heartbreaking. With this low or no market for poultry products, farmers are always not keen to venture into it.
