Even before the dust settles on contraband sugar that almost landed Garissa Township MP Aden Duale on fire, another report has emerged alleging the presence of poisoned rice in Kenyan markets.
According to the DCI director, detectives working on a tip-off have impounded a whopping one million bags of toxic rice in across the country.
The rice, which is said to be originating from Pakistan, has been largely condemned as unfit for human use but has eventually found its way into Kenya through the porous border points.
The consignment is further said to be way off past the expiry date by three years.
In addition to this, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs)has also refused to clear another 400 containers of 20kg jerrycans of cooking oil originating from Malaysia.
On Sunday, George Kinoti who is the Director of Criminal Investigations said rogue private importers were in the practice of printing new bags that are then transported to the high-end countries and are used to repackage the contaminated rice.
“It is true that we have impounded approximately one million bags of contraband rice stored in several warehouses across the counties. We believe the toxic rice might have been sneaked into local markets by rogue businessmen,” Mr Kinoti said as quoted by a local daily on Monday.
It would be upon Aden Duale as the leader of the majority to help the country get answers and ensure that those behind it are dealt with with the full force of the law.
Many will agree that his handling of the sugar scandal was not satisfactory.
Hopefully, this time around he will offer leadership.
