Many young men have joined the business after their post-basic education not knowing the fate that will befall them once they venture into this business. Almost all of these young men do acquire motorcycles by selling their small pieces of plots.

Many start the business at a high note, but after some time, they start 'earning' by scoring the so-called 'slay queens' of which their score gives them the well known Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI); HIV/AIDS, syphilis among others and they are never paid for the rides.

Kiptoo (not his real name) a motorcycle rider in Eldoret town confessed that he has been into the bodaboda business for the past five years: after he completed his form four exams, hoping that his star will shine by riding a motorcycle.

He scored a grade that could not give him a chance to pursue his career.

"The five years I have been on this business, I have never bought anything of value from the profit I get," he admitted. He also added that most of his money is diverted to beautiful ladies that he comes across and fall for him.

"I lost a friend of mine (Yegon) two years ago who never accepted that he had contracted HIV when he slept with his regular customer who had the disease," said a bodaboda operator who identified himself only as Rono.

Rono operates from Jua Kali trading centre on the outskirts of Eldoret town.
