As the scramble for the Coast votes intensifies, political bigwigs eyeing the vote block may be forced to go back to the drawing board following a unity deal between Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi.

With the two Governors rooting for the formation of the Coastal party going into the 2022 election following their Wednesday meeting in Mombasa, ODM leader Raila Odinga, whose ODM party enjoying too much following in the region may become one of the victims of the Joho-Kingi political game plan. 

Raila has since 2005 referendum cemented his place in Coast politics with the region overwhelmingly supporting him in the last three presidential elections. However, things may be changing, at least going by the latest happenings.

Being Raila’s most trusted men in the region, Joho and Kingi hold key to the former Premier’s political fortunes in the region. But what if a new party is formed by the two firebrand Governors to compete for the same political space with the giant ODM party?

Whatever happens, Raila’s future in Coast is pegged on his move on the political chessboard to counter the new party- if it will be formed.
